We have observed cats eating grass before but never understood the reasons why they do that. And we caught Mr. Yellow having a grass feast the other day so we quickly took these shots. And of course, we are definitely going to clear our doubts on cats eating grass this time!

Well, from some researches, it turns out that there are a few reasons for cats to do that. It appears that grass has become some sort of laxative for cats to pass hairballs lodged in their intestines. Therefore, after a grass feast, the grass will make cats vomit up hairballs.

Mr. Yellow sensed that he has been spotted. A bit startled there.
Sometimes when cats feels sick, they eat grass too. This will make them vomit as well and get rid of the poisons in their bodies. Eating grass is also a way to relieve inflammation of their throats and stomach ache.

Nevertheless, it didn’t disturb his grass feast. Whew~~
Speaking about eating habits, grass eating is also to add roughage to the cats’ diets.

He has finished his grass feast of the day. He looked away as if he was waiting for the grass to do its job in his stomach.

Seemed like the elimination of hairballs has begun. He looked tensed.

“Back off…I need some air.”
Well, he did vomitted not long after that. Hope he is alright.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackI think animals are very wise. They know how to cure themselves. I guess the cat threw out the hair ball from his stomach because cats usually use their tongues to clean their body. not only for themselves, but also for others. Dogs also eat grass when they are sick. So far, I didn’t see any hair ball for the dogs cases.
Sorry for letting your comment waiting so long before it appears. Something is wrong with our modem/router here and we are taking turn to get online because only one computer can connect to the internet at the same time.
Yes, you are right. Cats like to use their tongues to clean their body, that’s where the hairballs come from.
We as humans like to eat fried food but do not know how to get rid of the useless cholesterol from our body, that’s why we get sick. But I think nobody is going to eat grass. :p We should eat more fruit and vegetable.
What if my cat lives in an apartment and doesn’t go out? What can I do about this lack in my Judi’s diet?
You can put a pot of plant beside your cat’s house, just like Ah Wong. No need to remove any grass from the pot. Cat usually prefer grass than the plant.
Thanks :). By the way, do you know how to doctor plants? Mine dried up on me!
It depends on what type of plant. The life of plants such as cactus can be safe even two third of its body is dried up, but not all type of plants can survive. If it is small in size, you can pass it to SiewPeng, and we see what we can do about it.
