Helping a Friend as an DJ 01

Saturday evening, I helped my friends with her company’s dinner as a DJ.  There were some presentations and I had to choose correct songs and music to play.  That was the first time I controlled music in a big event with hundreds of people.  I was a bit under pressure.  Luckily everything was running smoothly.

Her staffs (about 20 people) were really busy doing something else, that was why she needed people besides her staffs to help her such as guests arrival registration, serving food etc.  SiewPeng helped to register the arrival of guests, and I helped to present the slide show from her notebook through a projector besides controlling the audio for the entire hall.

I have gained some experience in handling the amplifier:-

It was tough because during rehearsal there was only 1 disc player, and when the actual event was held, I had another dvd player but without TV.  So I did not know which track was playing, and I could only refer to the small display on the player.

The amplifier has 2 input channels - A and B, but I could not make 2 of the input switched on at the same time, I thought it was not possible on the amplifier that I used.

DVD player 1 was connected to the A channel,  and DVD player 2 was connected to the B channel.  The organization needed more than 3 mic(s) provided by the hotel, my friends brought another 2  on her own and I could only plug them into the karaoke port on both DVD players.

This method made the control even more difficult, because I could not separate the mic volume and and the music volume.  I could only hope that they were not speaking too soft or too loud to the mic.  And the addition 2 mic connected on DVD players could only have 1 of them working at the same time.

I had to switch the disc(s) fast, because their programs were continuous.  At the same time, I managed to put some effects such as applause, drum rolls etc..  Since I am not that experienced, I sometimes played it a bit late.

One thing that was out of my expectations is that I thought the knob control on the amplifier was supposed to be vertical, but what I have got was a rotation knob (look at the first picture above).

Thanks to my friend for giving me this opportunity to try something new and challenging.
