These are Bird Nest Fern pictures taken in different angles. The sunlight goes through the leaves and create a high contrast effect. If you see carefully you can notice the lines within each leaves. There are also the shadows effect at the overlapping leaves area. This photograhy technique is called backlighting.

Backlighting is a lighting technique in photography where the light is coming from behind the subject, toward the camera. The subject may be underexposed if it is taken using an automatic light metering camera. There are some solution like background cropping (during taking the photo, NOT in photoshop - it’s too late.) or increase the exposure value.

Here I have cropped the background to create the effect that I want. It means I did not allow any sunlight goes into the camera lense without going through the leaves so that the exposure is accurate.

Another example of backlighting with clear lines on the leaf and with some out-of-focused shadow.

This is the bird nest fern from top view.

Can you see the different without the backlighting technique? The textures and lines are not as clear as the clear as the previous photos.

My father has planted about 6 pots of bird nest ferns in our garden. Some of them are as big as 1 meter in diameter. Their leaves are in curly shape when they are still young. According to my research, this plant can be propogated by division, but until now, I did not see any new plants coming out. It can also be propogated by spores. The spores are under the leaves.

There are different types of bird nest ferns, some variety are small but the one in our garden is the big one and the leaves are thick.

Sometimes the leaves change their shape, but it is rare. Out of so many leaves that I’ve seen, only one or two leaves changed their shape.

It seems that the bird nest fern leaf has grown its fingers.
The bird nest fern is a good subject for photography. You can also use it to make your garden look great because of its giant size. It is very easy to be taken care of. Why not get one for your garden.
Currently, this plant is out of stock for sales in our garden. We will let you know as soon as it is available.
